University of Georgia researchers were among the first to gather and interpret data about the impact of the April 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil rig blowout in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Months later, as more questions than answers remain, scientists and policymakers understand that the full impact of this unprecedented environmental event will not be fully understood for years to come.
Research by UGA and Georgia Sea Grant scientists is answering questions important for science, the environment, policy and the citizens of Georgia, the U.S. and the world, including what’s happening to the oil, marine life, the sea floor, the coastal ecosystem, fisheries and more.
The UGA-Georgia Sea Grant Oil Spill website provides:
- news about UGA and Georgia Sea Grant research on the Gulf oil spill,
- current information on the status and impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, especially on Georgia’s coast, and
- access to UGA and national resources on the Gulf oil spill.
